I seriously think I might be doomed for the rest of my life after this world tour. I have gotten so accustomed to travelling alone, doing what I want, when I want, that I may have unknowingly put myself into quite a predicament when it comes to compromise. The train from Prague to Berlin went without incident, I am getting used to this stuff. Blair and I made it to the train station with time to spare to sample another different variation of a hot dog (sausage, whatever). Blair sat in the smoking section of the train which was fine by me, I wasn't about to sacrifice my lungs any more, I had aleady been to the smoker's capital of the world, PARIS.
I realized at some point after arriving in Berlin, that Blair and I seem to have a different style of approaching situations. For example, I was very hungry by the time we reached the hostel. I used all my EUROS to pay for the 2 nights accomodation for both Blair and I since he had not had a chance to stop at the ATM.
The hostel we have in Berlin is pretty swag and it was really easy to find off the Berlin metro stop, the hostel is called The Meininger. Conveniently, for people who were at the point of extreme starvation like myself, there was an ATM and a food vendor all within about 50 steps from the door of the hostel. Blair and I headed out the door and when I went to turn right to hit the ATM to purchase food from vendor 30 steps away, Blair told me that we were going to this 'other' CitiBank ATM so that he wouldn't have to pay a charge. According to the girl at the hostel desk that he spoke with, this was supposed to be a short walk. About 30 looooooooooooooong blocks later, we finally found the g'damn CitiBank ATM.
Please keep in mind at this point in my personal moment of drama, MLD has not been fed yet and was quite sufficidently cranky by about now. Here is my best German impression taken by a small part of the Berlin Wall this is still standing: If this had been one of my friends, or someone perhaps that I may have known a little better than a 48 hour aquaintance, I might have said something like "I'll give you the freakin' 2 EURO charge or whatever in GOD's name it is if we can stop for a crumb of food before I go into a sugar coma." It was at this point in time that I sadly reflected on my choice to travel with a complete stranger. I have been totally spoiled with the idea that as a self-admitted control freak, I have been in control of my own travel destiny whether it be picking a new place to see or what time and when I would like to eat. Especially when the urge to eat happens to be NOW.
Blair and I played nice mainly because I kept my trap shut, a skill I am still fine-tuning but getting better at. We met a group of people while wandering the city and I ended up meeting this really cool girl who is my age and is from Ireland. Claughda is a teacher here in Berlin and we hit it off immediately! Claughda and I had fun checking out some cute German boyz while wandering around in West Berlin. (I did find out on my bike tour todaz that Berlin has the 3rd highest gay population in the world, which probably explains all the very cute men around here!!) Claughda and I are supposed to meet up later tonight to go dancing hopefully. I lost Blair after I met her which was probably just as well. I saw him this morning and we exchanged pleasantries as we are in the same dorm.
Blair was not interested in doing the Berlin Fat Tire Bike Tour so I headed out to the metro at 10am and found the group at the meeting place at the TV tower. I had a great day today here in Berlin even though it has been pretty damn cold and it rained a bit while we on the bike tour. You may notice when you check out my Berlin Photo Album that I was a bit obsessed with our tour guide.
This may become obvious when you see how many pics of him that I uploaded...LOL His name is Enda and he is Irish from Vancouver. He is the cutest thing I have seen in a long time.
So I am off to head back to the hostel to get ready for tonight. I really wish it wasnät so cold..... I think I might go to Greece or Spain, springtime in Europe so far has been colder than it was when I left home in March! Well, maybe not exactly but definitely colder than all the other countries I visited before I landed in Europe!
Bring on the HEAT!
